Eco-Friendly Dog Ownership: Celebrating Earth Day 2021

Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is a special day to celebrate the earth, step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and be thankful for the beauty that is all around us! Enjoying the earth and time outside is so important for us and our pups, but just as important is remembering to do our part to protect the space we occupy. We here at Little Angels have a few tips and tricks that you can use to help make the time you spend with your dog even more eco-friendly!

Walk Instead of Drive

It is becoming more popular for food establishments and businesses to allow furry friends to accompany us on trips to the outlet mall or to our favorite restaurants. Not only does this allow us to spend more time with our pets, but it also gives us the opportunity to exercise them and be outside! So next time you make a trip to the corner market, maybe walk instead of drive. This will not only make your dog happy but will help reduce carbon emissions that come from driving your car.

Pick Up After Your Dog

Remember, when you take that stroll down to the corner market, your dog may have to go to the bathroom. When that happens, remember to pick up after him or her! Leaving your dog’s feces on the ground can cause issues for the environment. It promotes the spread of parasites and can also wash into the water supply, polluting our rivers, streams and creeks. By picking up after your dog, you are decreasing the risk of spreading disease to other animals, as well as protecting our water! You can even take it a step further and decided to use biodegradable doggie bags when cleaning up after your pup.

Donate Used Toys and Towels

This tip utilizes the ‘reuse’ portion of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.’ Why throw out your dog’s old toys and bones, or the towels that you’ve had for years? Local shelters, or even Service Dog Organizations like ours, could use those items to help keep their dogs happy and enriched. Consider donating your old pet supplies to help them and the environment.

Brush Your Dog Outside

This one may seem silly but doing something as simple as brushing and grooming your dog outside can be beneficial to the environment! Birds and small animals will collect the fur and use it to build nests and keep warm. Not only that, but you are also reducing your energy use by avoiding the vacuum cleaner!

Finally, when your family decides they need a fur friend, or maybe the second or third, in your household, consider adopting! This is a perfect example of a way to ‘recycle.’ There are so many dogs out there looking for loving homes!

These are just some of the ways that you and your dog can help the environment this Earth Day and beyond! Consider how you can reduce your footprint and do the little things to help this place that you call home stay safe.
